A Life in Art
For over forty years, Kathleen Lipinski has been capturing the essence of California's landscapes through painting and printmaking. Her art beautifully intertwines a deep love of nature with a commitment to realism, meticulous attention to detail, and an exceptional ability to capture the quality of light.
Born in Michigan, Kathleen's passion for art ignited with her first box of crayons. She honed her skills at a public high school in inner-city Detroit, where she majored in art for three years. Her education included drawing, painting, printmaking, advertising design, color theory, charcoal, and art history, among other subjects.
Enchanted by the beauty and intellectual expansiveness of California during a visit to her sister in 1968, Kathleen relocated to San Francisco and never looked back. She furthered her studies at the College of Marin, Santa Monica City College, and UC Santa Cruz, where she met fellow art student Steve Emery.
Together with a team of artists, Steve and Kathleen were instrumental in building the Santa Cruz Art Center. They studied in the Drawing and Painting studio under the guidance of a highly respected professor. In 1979, the couple returned to Marin and married in 1985.
They currently reside in Steve’s grandmother’s former house, which doubles as a gallery, studio, and home. They have one son, Adrian.
From 1979 through 1999, Kathleen focused primarily on serigraphy and silk-screen printing, designing intricate multi-color prints with Steve assisting in production. In the mid-1990s, she transitioned to creating large-format oil paintings, further expanding her artistic repertoire.
Kathleen's exhibitions include the deYoung Museum Open in 2021 and 2024, the Triton Museum, the Morris Graves Museum, and the Jenkins-Johnson Gallery in San Francisco and New York. Her work has also been featured at Marin/Scapes, on the cover of Marin Magazine, and has received accolades at the Mill Valley and Sausalito Art Festivals. In recognition of their artistic contributions and philanthropic efforts, Kathleen and Steve were honored with the Marin Cultural Treasure Award in 2015.
